In our latest blog we are taking a look at an upcoming event that we have been asked to get involved with and that’s the Lewis-Manning’s Muddy Dog Dash taking place at Upton Country Park on Sunday the 26th of March from 10am to 4.30pm.
Lewis-Manning is such a worthwhile organisation, providing extraordinary palliative and end of life care to the people of East Dorset and Purbeck for over 30 years. . The demand and need for hospice care services is forever increasing. However, these vital services that Lewis-Manning provides do not come cheap. So, in order to ensure Lewis-Manning can continue providing that essential care to those with life limiting illnesses, their fundraising team are always on the lookout for ways to involve the people of Dorset with fun, memorable and engaging activities whilst raising those much-needed funds.
As part of their day services they employ the use of therapy dogs with their patients. They found that animals bring out lots of amazing memories and positive parts of their lives, and therefore bring a bit of soothing escape and joy to those involved.
You can read more about Lewis-Manning Hospice Care and the services that they provide via this link.
The fundraising team, including Ruth Wright the organisation’s Area Fundraiser, made the link between dogs and raising funds and came up with the Muddy Dog Dash challenge.
The idyllic Upton Country Park was the first choice for the event as it has the perfect variety of terrains to make it more interesting for the participants, and is already a well-known favourite amongst dog walkers across Dorset. The dash will allow those taking part to do a 2km route through grassy meadows and through the stunning woodland area, with loads of fun obstacles all along the route. Those feeling up to it can go onto to do another loop, making it 4km, if they are feeling adventurous enough!
The Lewis-Manning team has planned a fantastic range of completely optional obstacles including hurdles, wiggle poles, tyre runs, ball pits, jumps and ramps to navigate, a scramble net through a gully, and then onto a water pool, because we all know how much our furry companions love a good splash about. There’s even a dog bar half way round which Nurturing by Nature is organising, giving out fresh bowls of water for the competitors.
Hot Radio is helping by providing their services and will be at the event throughout the day. They will be helping everyone to get started, and again at the finish, whilst providing a running commentary across the whole event. They will be continuing their efforts by playing plenty of doggy related music throughout the day to keep everyone entertained (even the hoomuns).
At the start, the participants will be released in 15 minute waves to ensure that there are no clog points when it comes to the obstacles. Of course, no-one has to do the obstacles, they’re there for fun, it’s entirely up to those taking part as to which, if any, they would like to have a go at.
Please enquire to Lewis-Manning if you have additional needs as per entry. You can find the right page by clicking here.
Each participant will receive a doggy goodie bag, a certificate, a rosette, and each doggy will receive a Muddy Dog Dash bandana.
The first 100 will also receive a Muddy Doggy Dash t-shirt to help them remember what promises to be an amazing day of fun.
As touched upon above, Hot Radio will be there providing a fun soundtrack throughout the day and there are a wide range of stalls to explore, from pet related goods, to sweeties for the non-four-legged attendees. There’s even a tombola for that additional little bit of fun.
Nurturing by Nature is sponsoring the event alongside headline sponsors, Barratt Homes and we will have plenty of goodies for people to buy for their pets.
There will even be a couple of hand-made dog houses donated for attendees to grab a photo opportunity for the day.
The money that’s raised will be going towards supporting the important care services that Lewis-Manning provide, including more of the dog therapy sessions that we know make a huge amount of impact.
It’s such a worthwhile cause that we are actively encouraging as many people as we can to come along and have some fun whilst raising important funding for Lewis-Manning Hospice Care.
Even if you are not taking part, please come along and have some fun!
IMPORTANT NOTICE – The event organisers are in need of volunteers to help marshal the obstacles. So if you, or someone you know, would be interested in lending a helping hand/paw, then please get in touch with one of the organisers. You can find their details by following this link.
