How do I know if my Dog has been bitten by a Snake

The Hidden Danger: Adder Bites and Your Beloved Pets

Snake bits can happen even in the UK

If you’re a devoted pet owner, ensuring the safety and well-being of your Dog is a top priority in every environment. For those of us living in areas where adders (the UK's only venomous snake) are common, it’s essential to be aware of the potential risks they pose to our pets, especially our curious dogs. But don't worry—this article will equip you with the knowledge you need to keep your pets safe without causing undue concern.

Signs of an Adder Bite in Pets

  1. Swelling: Typically around the bite area, most often on the face or limbs.

  2. Pain: Indicated by your pet licking, biting, or showing discomfort in the affected area.

  3. Lethargy: Your pet may become unusually tired or weak.

  4. Vomiting: A common reaction to the venom.

  5. Drooling: Excessive saliva can be a sign of distress.

Immediate Actions to Take

  1. Stay Calm: Your pet can sense your anxiety. Keeping calm will help both of you.

  2. Limit Movement: This helps prevent the spread of venom. Carry your pet if possible.

  3. Seek Veterinary Help: Contact your vet immediately. Inform them of the situation so they can prepare for your arrival.

  4. Do Not Treat the Bite Yourself: Avoid home remedies or attempting to suck out the venom.

Understanding Adders

When to Be Extra Cautious

Adders are most active from March to October, especially on warm, sunny days. Be particularly cautious during this time, as your pets may be more likely to encounter these snakes as they bask in the sunshine.

Preventing Adder Bites

Prevention is always better than cure in our opinion and here are some practical tips that we have used that can help to keep your pets safe:

  1. Leash in Risky Areas: When walking in areas known to have adders, keep your dog on a leash. It may not always seem the most practical or fun thing when faced with the open space of a walk but using a lead or a leash especially in areas of heath land can be best practice.

  2. Stay on Paths: Stick to well-trodden paths and avoid letting your pet wander into long grass or underbrush. Snakes are not wanting to deliberatly get in our way and will tend to avoid busy areas, in favour of quieter spots. Sticking to the path and avoiding rambeling adventuring is also best practice.

  3. Awareness: Learn to recognise adder habitats and be vigilant during spring and summer when adders are most active. It sounds very obvious but knowing the environments can be a valuable resource.

  4. Training: Train your dog to return to you on command, reducing the risk of them approaching an adder. Easyier for some than others but a great tip for any situation.

Understanding Adders

Adders (Viper berus) are relatively shy creatures, preferring to avoid human contact. They are most commonly found in heathlands, woodlands, and moorlands, basking in the sun or hiding under rocks and logs. Their distinctive zigzag pattern and red eyes make them easily recognisable. Adders are generally not aggressive and will only bite if they feel threatened.

The Danger of Adder Bites

While adder bites are rare, they can pose a serious risk to your pets, particularly dogs who love to explore. An adder bite can cause pain, swelling, and other more serious symptoms in pets. It's important to act quickly and calmly if you suspect your pet has been bitten.

Conclusion

Adder bites, while rare, can be serious. By understanding the risks and taking sensible precautions, you can enjoy outdoor adventures with your pets while keeping them safe. Remember, knowledge is your best defence. Stay informed, stay calm, and cherish the time you spend with your beloved pets.
